But:小词发挥大作用-双语

But: a Small, Common, and Important Word

But:小词发挥大作用。让北京翻译公司北京金橄榄外文翻译有限公司与您一起看看以下内容:

The simple, three-letter word "but" might not sound or look special, interesting or beautiful.

“But”这个单词只有简单的三个字母,可能听起来或看起来并不特别、有趣或美丽。

But this little word can be a powerful force in writing and in speaking.

但在写作和说话中,这个小小的单词可以发挥出一股强大的力量。

It can play an important part in creating colorful, interesting sentences.

它可以在创造丰富多彩、有趣的句子方面发挥重要作用。

In this Everyday Grammar, we will explore how a simple connecting word makes for good storytelling.

在本期《日常语法》中,我们将探讨如何用一个简单的连词来讲好故事。

The word "but" has many uses.

“But”这个词有很多用法。

It can act as a coordinating conjunction, preposition, adverb, and sometimes even a noun – as in the expression No ifs ands or buts about it!

它可以充当并列连词、介词、副词,有时甚至是名词——就像短语No ifs ands or buts about it(没有任何理由跟借口)!

For today's report, let's explore the part "but" plays as a coordinating conjunction.

在今天的报道中,让我们来探讨一下“but”这一角色作为并列连词的作用。

A conjunction joins two things together.

连词将两个事物连接在一起。

When acting as a coordinating conjunction, "but" is used to add information to an earlier statement that usually contrasts with it in some way.

当充当并列连词时,“but”用来给前面的陈述添加信息,这些信息通常在某种程度上与之形成对比。

We often use "but" to connect two clauses, or groups of words that have a subject and a predicate.

我们经常用“but”来连接两个从句,或有主语和谓词的词组。

Consider these lines from "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz," by F Scott Fitzgerald.

让我们来看下F•斯科特•菲茨杰拉德的《像里兹饭店那样大的钻石》中的这些句子。

"John strained his eyes to see whether there might be men coming down the mountain, but the mountain was bare of human life."

“约翰极力睁着眼睛想看看有没有人下山,但山上没有人影。”

The first clause starts with "John strained his eyes" and the second clause starts with "but the mountain."

第一个从句的开头是“John strained his eyes”,第二个从句的开头是“but the mountain”。

The first part of the sentence suggests an effort – straining of the eyes.

句子的第一部分暗示着眼睛的极力张开。

The second part of the sentence suggests that the effort was to no use – John did not see anyone.

句子的第二部分表明,这一努力是徒劳的——约翰没有看到任何人。

Consider how the sentence might have been different if "but" were not used.

想一想,如果没有使用“but”,句子可能会有什么不同。

It might be something like this:

它可能是这样的:

"John strained his eyes to see whether there might be men coming down the mountain, and he didn't see anyone."

“约翰睁大眼睛想看看有没有人下山,他一个人也没看见。”

This sentence is much less interesting.

这句话就没那么有趣了。

Let's explore why.

让我们来探索其中的原因。

In the book Storyworthy, the American storyteller Matthew Dicks described a few words that can bring a story to life.

在《故事价值》一书中,美国说书人马修•迪克斯描述了几句能让故事生动起来的话。

One of these words is "but."

其中一个词就是“but”。

Dicks says "but" has an interesting effect on the reader or listener.

迪克斯说,“but”对读者或听众有着有趣的影响。

The words that come before "but" create an expectation.

出现在“but”之前的词语创造了一种期望。

What comes after "but" goes against the expectation.

“But”之后的情况与期望相反。

This creates interest between statements and ideas.

这在陈述和想法之间产生了趣味。

Other common conjunctions, such as "and," do not have the same effect, Dicks believes.

迪克斯认为,其他常见的连词,如“and”,不会产生同样的效果。

Speaking or writing that uses "and" too much becomes more like a list – and lists are not very interesting.

使用“and”在口语或写作中变得更像是一个清单——而清单并不是很有趣。

Now, it's your turn to do an exercise.

现在,轮到你做练习了。

Take these two statements and connect them using "but."

把这两个语句用“but”连接起来。

You can pause the audio after the second statement if you need more time before hearing the answer.

如果在听到答案之前需要更多时间,您可以在第二个陈述之后暂停音频。

She said she had lost their address long ago.

她说她很久以前就把他们的地址弄丢了。

A few days later it miraculously turned up.

几天后,它奇迹般地出现了。

Here is one way to connect the two statements.

这里有一种方法可以将这两种说法联系起来。

It comes from the short story, "That in Aleppo Once..." by Vladimir Nabokov:

它来自弗拉基米尔•纳博科夫的一个短篇小说《曾在阿勒颇》:

"She said she had lost their address long ago, but a few days later it miraculously turned up..."

“她说她很久以前就把他们的地址丢了,但几天后它奇迹般地出现了……”

This report is not only about telling stories.

本期节目不仅仅是讲故事。

It is also about exploring connections between ideas.

它也是关于探索思想之间的联系。

Such connections are important for expressing more complex language in writing and in speaking.

这种联系对于在写作和口语中表达更复杂的语言是很重要的。

Remember, like any word or structure, it is good to use "but" in the correct amount.

记住,就像任何单词或结构一样,正确使用“but”是很重要的。

It is like cooking.

这就像做饭一样。

You need the right amounts of the right ingredients to get a nice finished product.

你需要适量的正确的配料才能做出美味的食物。

If you add too much of any one thing, the result might not be very good.

如果任何一样配料加得太多,食物的呈现可能都不是很好。

The next time you read stories or listen to English speakers, pay careful attention to how they use "but."

下次当你读故事或听讲英语的人时,要仔细注意他们是如何使用“but”的。

It's a small, simple word, but it can bring variety and richness to your language.

这是一个小而简单的词,但它可以给你的语言带来多样性和丰富性。

I'm John Russell.
